Sunset Strip's Rainbow Bar let Ron Jeremy assault women in its bathroom, lawsuit alleges

May 25, 2023

Two women filed suit against the Rainbow Bar & Grill, claiming the famed West Hollywood watering hole routinely allowed porn actor Ron Jeremy to drug and sexually assault women in the VIP bathroom.

The women, both anonymous in the lawsuit, said they were forcibly touched by Jeremy in the middle of the bar on March 17, 2017, even though the bar was already aware of similar conduct in the past by Jeremy.

A South Korean company plans to build a $72 million factory in Georgia to make parts for electric vehicles, hiring more than 140 workers. The company's corporate family has two other factories in the same industrial park, supplying a nearby Kia plant. Virginia lawmakers will reconvene in Richmond next week to consider a compromise General Assembly negotiators recently reached on the long-delayed state budget. Gov. Glenn Youngkin's office said Tuesday he has called the Legislature into session Sept. 6 to consider the deal. Negotiators representing the Republican-controlled House of Delegates and Democratic-controlled Senate announced last week the bare-bones outlines of a compromise budget. It would boost education spending and offer some tax relief, mostly in the form of one-time rebates. The full details of the plan haven’t been released.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol says a migrant woman died in South Texas after spending just under a day in federal custody. The agency said in a statement Tuesday that border agents encountered the 29-year-old woman and her family in the Rio Grande Valley on Sunday afternoon. While she was in their custody, she experienced a “medical emergency” and was treated by an on-site medical team and then taken to a hospital in Harlingen where she was pronounced dead. The agency says the woman spent less than 20 hours in custody. Agency guidelines say migrants must be processed within 72 hours. No details were offered about the woman’s medical condition or her nationality.

The actions of a ranger for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation in northwestern Nevada are under review after he pointed a weapon Sunday at climate activists blocking the road to the annual Burning Man counter-culture festival in the desert. The tribe's chairman declined to say if the weapon pointed at protesters was a handgun or a Taser. Videos on social media showed the ranger plowing into the group's blockade and announcing on a bullhorn, “I will take you all out.” The coalition that organized the protest criticized the ranger's actions as excessive.

Hurricane Idalia is forecast to strike Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 major hurricane on Wednesday and then move across the state and southeast U.S. out into the Atlantic. There is at least one model that suggests the storm could loop back toward Florida’s east coast.

After some Florida insurance companies were accused of shortchanging customers’ claims after Hurricane Ian last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis and state regulators are warning insurance companies to make whole homeowners who experience damage from Hurricane Idalia.

West Virginia University plans to eliminate its world languages department but is recommending letting students take some language elective courses as it faces a growing budget shortfall. The state’s flagship university announced recently it was considering slashing the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics despite criticism from students and faculty. The school is facing declining enrollment and a $45 million budget shortfall. After an appeals hearing, the university’s office of the provost announced Tuesday it plans to still go forward with seeking the bulk of the cuts, but allow continued face-to-face instruction in Spanish and Chinese. A final decision by its board of governors is expected in September.

A longtime superintendent at a New York City building fatally stabbed his wife and two young children before taking his own life earlier this week. Police said the four bodies were discovered with multiple stab wounds inside a building on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The attack shocked neighbors, who described the family to police as stable and “very loving” and said there were few signs of outward trouble. Lopez was set to leave his job for a new role in Westchester County in the coming weeks — a relocation that police say they are investigating as a possible factor in the murder-suicide.

Florida’s Big Bend is one of the last truly natural places in the state. It’s not Disney World, it’s not South Beach. This is where people go to hunt alligators, fish for tarpon and search for scallops in the shallow waters. Now it’s in the bull's-eye of a major hurricane. The Big Bend is where the peninsula merges into the Panhandle, just southeast of the capital, Tallahassee, and well north of the Tampa metro area. It's where people go to appreciate nature and be left alone. But Hurricane Idalia would be the first major storm to hit there since Hurricane Easy in 1950, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Feeding on some of the hottest water on the planet, forecasters expect Hurricane Idalia to rapidly strengthen as it bears down on Florida. Scientists say 89-degree water where Idalia has been hovering effectively acts as rocket fuel for the storm. Hurricanes get their energy from warm water, and Idalia is at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Meteorologists said sudden storm strengthening is especially dangerous for coastal residents. This has been happening a lot lately. Six storms in 2021 rapidly intensified. A new study says rapid intensification is happening three times more often now globally than 40 years ago.

The nation’s top environmental official said he fully supports his agency’s decision to block a proposed gold and copper mine in Alaska’s salmon-rich Bristol Bay, even as the state of Alaska has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn that action. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan tells The Associated Press that they are proud of their decision to evaluate the Pebble Mine project and do what was necessary to protect Bristol Bay. The EPA in January vetoed the proposed Pebble Mine, citing concerns with possible impacts on the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery. Regan’s first stop on his four-day tour of Alaska will be in the Bristol Bay village of Igiugig,.

Brock Bowers is a player who defies labels. The Georgia depth chart lists him as a tight end. But there are times when he looks like the fastest receiver on the field. Other times, one would swear he’s one of the best running backs in the country. Bowers is a big reason the Bulldogs have won two straight national championships. They open the season Saturday against Tennessee-Martin as an overwhelming favorite to pull off an unprecedented three-peat. Heading into his third season between the hedges, the California native already has put together a career’s worth of highlight-reel plays.

The year’s last major tennis tournament began Monday and ends on Sept. 10 with the men’s singles final.

A landmark court ruling in 2018 determined New Mexico wasn’t meeting its responsibilities when it came to providing an adequate education to Native American students and many others, but tribal leaders say change has been slow. Now, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez intends to take over the litigation from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's office to ensure state education officials comply with the court-ordered mandates. The announcement was made public Tuesday, just days after Torrez met with a group of Pueblo governors. State lawmakers during the last legislative session earmarked millions of dollars for improvements, but tribal advocates say they have been waiting years for meaningful progress.

The extreme heat that has plagued metro Phoenix this summer has led to another concert cancellation. Rapper 50 Cent says his scheduled show Tuesday at an outdoor venue in west Phoenix has been called off because of the sweltering weather. The rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, wrote on social media that “116 degrees is dangerous for everyone.” The Phoenix area is closing in on the record for most 110-degree days in a year — 53 days, set in 2020. Weather Service meteorologists say Tuesday marks the 51st day. The shows of other musicians have also been impacted by this year’s heat, including heavy metal band Disturbed, which canceled its July show.

A shooting that likely happened inside of Guaranteed Rate Field, followed by a scary moment for Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. in Colorado. Both in a span of four days. While Major League Baseball is on track for a marked increase in attendance this year, the pair of high-profile incidents raised questions about the safety of players and fans inside and outside of big league ballparks. A spokeswoman for the Major League Baseball Players Association said Tuesday that the union takes player safety “very seriously” and that it reviews club and stadium protocols throughout every season “to mitigate the possibility of similar future incidents.” Acuña had an encounter with two fans during Atlanta’s 14-4 win over Colorado on Monday night.

U.S. officials say the FBI and its partners in Europe infiltrated and seized control of a major malware network that was used for more than 15 years to commit a gamut of online crimes including crippling ransomware attacks. They then remotely removed its malicious software agent — known as Qakbot — from thousands of infected computers. The operation was announced Tuesday in Los Angeles, where U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said the criminal network had facilitated about 40 ransomware attacks alone over 18 months that officials said Qakbot administrators about $58 million. “Nearly ever sector of the economy has been victimized by Qakbot," he said.

A company has bid $5.6 million to lease federal waters off the Louisiana coast for wind energy generation. Tuesday's one-of-a-kind auction marked a modest start for wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico. Only one of three available tracts received bids Tuesday. The Biden administration said the tract covers more than 100,000 acres and could harness enough wind power to supply 435,000 homes. Analysts cited a variety of factors behind the current low interest in federal Gulf waters, including inflation and technical challenges in the Gulf. Still, they noted a growing interest in the region for wind power.
